.....When
I saw the antics of the local club "The Tully Bowhunters" at the Rain
Festival which is held here every wet season. They had made a giant
pig's head on a Landcruiser chasing a wounded bowhunter down the main
street. I thought to myself I gotta' have some of what these fellows
are on. Now I know what pure adrenalin can do to you. Before
long Albert Agale, Ted Salleras, Colin Venturato and myself had a
trip planned to the Basalt Wall where I nailed my first boar (I was
hooked!) |

.....A
make-shift backpack and quiver, brownie camera, a pair of vollies
and a forty-five pound Bear Recurve with timber shafts. Come to think
of it, not much has changed in fifteen years. |

.....Flip
a coin! Making
a set of hunting arrows, getting together with mates at the Club,
tracking a good boar, stalking a good boar or to put in the perfect
shot on a good boar, that first beer after long successful day's hunting,
to run a tape over a thirty points plus set of tusks or the sounds
you hear and the thoughts you have when you are lying in your swag
last thing at night.....I can't pick, can you?! |

.....Either
a recurve or longbow, both are hard to beat for my hunting needs.
At the moment I shoot a seventy pound Hatfield Take Down recurve with
a bow quiver and 2219 Alloys with Allan Davies Heads. This combination
gives me the edge at close range and when shooting through thick cover....
Although longbows are lighter to carry and more forgiving. |

.....On
my first trip to the Basalt Wall with Albert Agale I took a twenty
seven point boar with my first arrow at an animal. From that moment
on I knew the bow was for me. |

.....In
the early days when I was travelling around Australia, I went goat
hunting in South West Queensland with Col Ross and Tony Knight from
Toowoomba. Earlier this day I shot my first goat, a hundred and thirteen
points billy. That afternoon we saw a boar come in on a dam, so we
stalked down on him. I stayed near the top of the wall while Tony
crept down on the boar in his wallow. At
twenty meters he stopped to shoot but I motioned him to get closer.
Fifteen meters he stopped to shoot and again I urged him closer and
it went on. At eight meters there was no way he was going any further.
He
took the boar through the ear. It travelled about twenty-five meters.
It was his first decent boar with a bow. The look on his face and
the excitement he showed will stay in my memory forever. I felt proud
to be a part of it. |

.....I'll
have to have more than one moment..... My
record class buff with one arrow from a longbow.
My
Chital stag taken at the Basalt Wall in ' 98.
The
stalking and taking of my thirty-three points plus boars........All
moments in the bush are good, but these are special. |

.....On
our yearly ten day trip in ' 96 my hunting mate Kim Alderman was gored
by a wounded boar. From that initial attack at seven a.m. until getting
him into Mareeba Hospital at four p.m. That was my worst hunting day. |

.....Those
creatures with the snouts that escaped from Captain Cook back in the
1700's, they are my favourites. iI is a sort of a love-hate relationship
we have. Even though I've taken eleven record class and over fifty
trophy class boars with the bow I still love them to death. |

.....Seven
years ago I was all but on a plane to Canada to hunt bears, when my
wife fell pregnant with our first child so that ended that little
escapade. I
would still like to fulfill that dream one day and also hunt big horn
sheep. I reckon that would be the ultimate challenge. |

.....Our
club meets every three weeks so we give the 3D's a workout then. Other
than that, only before a hunt. I shoot both field points and broadheads
for practice. |

.....Natural
- if it feels and looks good..let it go! I have never been shown how
to throw a stone or a dart so I reckon there is only one style of
shooting an bow. The
game I hunt never seems to stand still or at a set distance for any
length of time, so aiming must be instinctive or a natural reaction. |

.....Apart
from the bowhunters' educational camps for young club members, I enjoy
taking novices and juniors on trips away to get their first kills
and teach them some bush craft so hopefully one day they can fulfill
their own bowhunting dreams. |

Bill
Hill,; for setting the benchmark of the Australian Record for boar
of 36 4/8 in 1982; that gave us something to chase and keep our sights
set high. Howard
Hill's - ' Hunting the Hard Way' is my bible; I must have read it
cover to cover ten times already. |

.....Fresh
water fishing and canoeing are a great pastime of mine. I have also
just released my first hunting video - "Bowhunting The Traditional
Way", so I'm endeavouring to better this aspect. |
